Thirteen years on the same team (917 games, 30,131 minutes), averaging 18.5 points per game (7th all time on team), 9.5 assists per game, (6,945 total assists good for 1st all-time on team), 6,167 field goals made (6th all-time), and a .803 free throw % (4,621-5,753 good for 9th all-time on team). This same man once had 28 assists in one game. The mystery man I'm talking about is none other than Celtics living legend, and currently unemployed at CSN, Bob Cousy. You might know him as "Cooz" or "Houdini of the Hardwood", but one thing us Celtics fans are all sure of is that the point guard out from Holy Cross could straight up play ball back in the day.
Unfortunately I wasn't around when the Celtics dominated the NBA year in and year out for a decade. I missed out on the original Big Three and on the glory days of Celtics past. Last year was an amazing experience for me, but I can't imagine seeing that every year for ten years. That being said, I still feel connected to those teams because of how rich the Celtics organization is in tradition. On any given night at The Garden, you'll see JoJo White, Heinsohn, Cooz, Havlicheck, Russell, Cedric "Cornbread" Maxwell, Ainge, and up until his death, Red was always in attendance.
As a child, I'll never forget sitting in my seat and watching Jo Jo White walk by and say hi to me. I'll never forget how Cedric "Cornbread" Maxwell asked me what I thought about the trade that sent Ricky Davis to Minnesota for Wally Szczerbiak (for the record, he hated the trade). Finally, I'll never forget smoking a victory cigar with Red Auerbach after a huge Celtics win (ok, that didn't happen). The bottom line is that the connection to Celtics past has always been a close one, one that I have been proud to be a part of. After seeing the Celtics win the NBA Finals, I feel like I'm finally "certified" as a Celtics fan.
So what's my point here? Why all the Bob Cousy stats? Well, those are the stats of a now laid off Bob Cousy from Comcast Sports Network. Every year for a while now, Bob Cousy would sit in on 10 home games to help Mike Gorman and Tommy Heinsohn in the broadcast booth.
Listen, I'm not here to tell you that Cousy was the best thing to happen to broadcasting, but the fact is he brought a different perspective to the game. He doesn't always have to be right, or sound right, to be loved. Sometimes I loved his pessimistic attitude, and I liked the exchanges between him and Heinsohn also. It was fun to listen to him talk about Rajon Rondo. Cousy, being the best PG that ever played for the Celtics, knows a thing or two about PG play, and could be pretty insightful about it.
Needless to say, a lot of Celtics fans are outraged. I sent CSN an e-mail saying how upset I was at this decision. They sent back an automated response on the situation. Members of Celticsblog.com, and other Celtics based blogs, are extremely angry at this news and it has been a hot topic on the boards. Two main posts on Celticsblog.com have generated almost 2,000 hits and 87 responses as of Wednesday afternoon. The links to the posts are CSN fired Cousy! CSN bring him back for his 10 games! and CSN's response to Cousy. If you would like to also write in to CSN, the link is here. Please let them know how outraged you are by this.
The Celtics are built off of winning, heart, and tradition. It pains me to see the bridge between past and present slowly burning. Heinsohn is getting older, and can only broadcast home games, and now Cousy gets fired from his 10 games? What's next? Who is running the show over there at Comcast, Rick Pitino?
Bob Cousy isn't coming through that door, Red Auerbach isn't coming through that door, and Tom Heinsohn is only coming through that door half the time. That, my friends, is a damn shame.
