On the night of Oct. 3, Death Cab for Cutie performed a concert at the Agganis Arena, at Boston University. Even though it was my fifth time seeing them in concert, the band still surpassed my expectations for the show.
Death Cab for Cutie provides their listeners with heart-felt lyrics that are sure to find meaning in some aspect of your life. It is because of their relatable lyrics that Death Cab's fan base has continually increased over the years. Therefore, it was no surprise to see the arena packed. The age variations of the audience were diverse, however, most of the people at this particular show were high school to college students. Some seem to have been fans from the beginning of Death Cab's career, while others were new to the scene. Nonetheless, both groups of people gathered at the Arena to see an unforgettable musical experience.
The show began with the song, "Bixby Canyon Bridge", from their newest album, Narrow Stairs. Front man Ben Gibbard also played his most famous songs, "I Will Follow You into the Dark", "Soul Meets Body", and "I Will Possess Your Heart".
Their set list ranged from mellow songs such as "Tiny Vessels" to more upbeat melodies such as "The Sound of Settling" thus, taking the audience on an emotional roller coaster. The band, however, mostly played songs from their older albums such as, "Company Calls" from We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes and "We Laugh Indoors" from The Photo Album. His set list choice makes sense since the band is re-releasing songs from previous albums in November. Although a wise marketing choice, that decision may have been a let down to the new fans that may not have been familiar with the older albums.
Stage-wise, there was nothing fancy. It was a simple stage backed with three red curtains and the appearance of various colored strobe lights throughout the performance. However, the lack of stage aesthetics was not a hindrance on the concert. Gibbard connected with his audience and made them feel involved in the show. It was his stage presence that made the show even more enjoyable.
On the whole, the concert turned out to be a success for the band and with another album on the way, Death Cab for Cutie continues to prevail through the musical world.
