Jay Baruchel is someone who has always been a supporting actor in comedies. “She’s Out of My League” gives him his first shot, but sadly his first opportunity could have gone better. “League” is an average romantic comedy, with an above average leading man.

Kirk (Baruchel) is a TSA worker who hates his life. Down on his luck for over two years from losing his girlfriend, he helps out Molly (Alice Eve) who just so happened to leave her iPhone behind during a security check.

He gets it back to her and she decides to repay him by going to a Penguins game. It’s obvious Molly is a “10,” or a hard 10 as his friends say. Kirk is considered a “5” – after doing numerous equations to find this out – but she surprisingly starts to fall for him, and he for she.

The movie runs the line of being too raunchy or too goofy. The way Kirk and Molly meet seems a little too unbelievable to be true, but everything after that seems believable and comes across as natural.

Much like any romantic comedy, there are four parts; they are: how they meet, the good times, the break up and finally the romantic reunion. The break up part in this movie again seems a little too unbelievable and kind of forced.

While the movie is about Kirk and his band of friends, much time isn’t spent on Molly and how she feels about her relationship with Kirk. Kirk’s friends feel almost no happiness for him and try to convince him that it’s only a matter of time before they will break up. The goes for Molly’s friend Patty (Krysten Ritter) who keeps scolding her for being with Kirk. At least Kirk’s friends congratulated him once. So much for support from friends.

“League” also seems like it wanted to please both men and women, but only in select scenes. Some scenes guys will like and some scenes guys will hate. Same with the women. Both won’t enjoy the entire movie completely but will love the scenes they like.

Bashing aside, the movie has its sweet moments and some genuinely funny ones as well making for an OK date movie. Alice Eve is genuinely sweet, and Krysten Ritter (“Breaking Bad”) steals almost every scene she is in as Alice’s crass best friend. T.J. Miller (“Cloverfield”) also steals most of the scenes he is in. The soundtrack is a little cliché but still good.

Overall, “She’s Out of My League” gets a 3 out of 5.
