Dexter is in line at the post office, waiting to mail his package to Louis. While he is standing, the woman at the desks closes her window, making Dexter have to wait longer. What does he do? He takes her name plaque, and slices her throat. Well, at least that’s what he does in his head.

The urge to kill is stronger than ever in Dexter. While Deb is keeping him confined, there is no way he can he can kill, something that is eating away at Dexter’s patience. While Deb calls for a meeting in Miami Metro, Masuka begins annoying Dexter about the fact that Deb looks angry with him. Dexter answers his questions with a pen through his throat, but again this was simply a daydream.

Still, the anger inside of Dexter continues to rise. Deb gives him the job to take a DNA sample from a prisoner. When the prisoner gets mouthy with Dexter, he witnesses Dexter’s dark side. Dexter attacks, but Deb quickly pulls him out of the investigation room, scolding him for his actions. However, Dexter warns Deb that if she continues to watch his every move, something bad is going to happen.

Despite Deb’s words, Dexter is determined to show his sister why he kills, and how. He pulls out a file on a woman-killer named Speltzer. While he is looking over the file, the package Dexter had sent earlier arrives for Masuka, not Louis, like the viewer had previously thought. When Masuka opens the package, he removes a piece of evidence – the hand from the Ice Truck Killer – and a letter that reveals Louis was the eBay buyer of the hand. Masuka fires Louis on the spot. Louis is finally removed from Dexter’s work life, but Dexter has plans to remove the man from the rest of his life as well.

The stripper, Nadya, turns up at the station to speak to Quinn. She asks him about the bracelet Kaja was wearing when she was murdered, but Quinn assures her that a bracelet was not found on the body. It turns out the bracelet has a tracker in it. When Nadya brings the news back to Baskov that the bracelet is nowhere to be found, he tells Nadya that she must get close to Quinn in order to find out what the cops know about Viktor. Nadya cannot stand the pressure and tells Quinn that the Ukranian mob ordered her to get close to him for information. Quinn promises he will protect her and send her information to keep the mob happy, but she must return with information on Mike Anderson’s death as well.

Louis is faced with Dexter’s second blow when he returns to his home after being fired. He finds Jaime, his girlfriend, watching a video of him and a stripper getting intimate. He tries to convince Jaime that this had happened before they were together, but she catches him in a lie. She storms out of his apartment.

After Dexter reveals to Deb that he knows Speltzer is going to kill again, because of his shaven head, he goes to the cemetery where Speltzer works. Despite Deb’s orders to stay away. Dexter notices that Speltzer finds a certain mausoleum very important and notes to return to check it out fully.

Deb orders Dexter to accompany Batista to Hannah McKay’s house, where he will need to take a DNA sample. Hannah is introduced as a new character and there is foreshadowing that she could be Dexter’s next love interest. Batista questions her about the girls Wayne buried, but she tells him she knows nothing and cannot provide him with any more information.

Baskov has the bracelet tracked and finds out that his son Viktor has been murdered and dumped in the bottom of the ocean. He requests that the tracker tells him which marina, and which boat, Viktor was dumped from. They follow the tracker to Dexter’s boat. When they get to the destination, they find Louis on Dexter’s boat; he claimed he was trying to sink the boat. After Baskov questions Louis, it seems as if he is going to let him go, especially after Louis gives them Dexter’s name, but Louis is shot in the head.

That night, Dexter is able to visit the mausoleum and find the proof he needs to show that Speltzer was the cause for the women’s murders. He gets a voicemail from Deb claiming she was sitting outside Speltzer’s house, doing one more round. Dexter takes off. Speltzer invites a young girl into his house with the intention to kill her. He is seen dressed up in an all black costume with horns sticking out from the mask. The upstairs of Speltzer’s house is a dangerous maze where he sets the girl loose; she is seen frantically running through the treacherous maze. Deb enters the house when she hears a girl scream. When she gets in there, Spelzter grabs her and her arm gets caught in barbed wire.

Dexter makes it to the house and hits Speltzer in the head to knock him out before he can hurt Deb. After Dexter helps Deb from the barbed wire, they go look for the young girl. They are too late; she is covered in bruises, dead. While Deb and Dexter search for the girl, Speltzer jumps through the window and gets away.

When Deb sees the girl get carried away in the body bag, she suddenly realizes why Dexter kills. She tells him the next day that she hates what he does, but she understands it. Deb also tells Dexter he should move out. Dexter pleads that he is still her brother and nothing has changed, but Deb responds that everything has changed. He may have gotten the freedom he’s been wanting for the past weeks, but Dexter also realizes that freedom comes with a cost.
