On March 6 at the Holiday Inn ballroom, the Caribbean Student Network (CSN) held their annual cultural fashion show, which turned out to be a very formal and exclusive event.

Students who attended first showed their tickets and said their names as they were confirmed in the guest list. Shortly after, attendees headed to the top floor of the Holiday Inn to watch CSN display the seven deadly sins through fashion. Before entering the room though, people got a wristband and were able to purchase bracelets to support Haiti.

The event was free and donation baskets were passed around during the show collecting money for Partners in Health to benefit the Haiti earthquake relief.

The show began with a performance from “Dutch Rebelle.” They entertained the crowd and got them ready for the first sin representation, which was ‘sloth.’ The models came out walking the runway to songs from Rihanna’s new album. They walked slowly and set the lazy mood in dark clothing and black lipstick.

This was continued with ‘wrath,’ in which a model ripped pieces of a black cloth demonstrating her anger. During the ‘envy’ set, the models showed off a wide range of different styles.

And what is a fashion show without the bathing suit piece? During ‘lust’ the models walked down the runway in different colored and styled bikinis.

“Front Page” and “Famous Nobodies” performed also as well. However, their microphone seemed to be so low, that only the guests seated near them truly enjoyed the performance.

Last but not least, ‘greed,’ ‘gluttony’ and ‘pride’ were demonstrated through the clothing, and the male models were brought out.

During ‘pride’ a carnival scene was painted by the bright colored costumes. The SU Step Team put on a performance as well which captivated the audience.

The host of the show was only heard by the first couple of rows. The atmosphere, though it was a Haitian relief party, was extremely enclosed to the Haitian culture.

“Overall it was a good event, good music and clothes,” said a member of the class of 2012, “but I expected a lot more energy from the public and from those involved in the fashion show, especially since the Caribbean, specifically Haiti, has been going through so much.”

The setting itself didn’t exactly welcome other cultures into it, but became more of a Haitian and Caribbean get together.

“Overall it was good but I felt this was an event that should have made us come together as a community” commented Roxxi Correa after watching the show.

Last but not least, one of the best elements of the Haitian culture was the food and unfortunately at this fashion show there was none.

“It could have been better but it wasn’t bad” said a freshman who attended the event, “I liked the setup with the seven deadly sins, it was different but seating [made it] hard to see.”

In the end, CSN put on a very creative show but came up short for the satisfaction of the audience sitting in the back rows. With a satisfactory night thanks to the modeling and outfits, I give the runway show a 2.5 out of 5.
