Summer Movie Preview

Iron Man 2 (Paramount)

The Oscar races are over and the cinemas are abuzz with the sound of moviegoers eager to see explosives ("The A-Team," "Salt"), sequels ("Shrek 4," "Iron Man 2"), long forgotten A-listers (hello, Russell Crowe and Julia Roberts) and above all… vampires ("Twilight Saga: Eclipse"). So put down the sun block and head for the nearest air conditioned multiplex because there's a fresh crop of films awaiting your price of admission.

Robert Downey Jr. reprises his role as Tony Stark in "Iron Man 2," which opens May 7th. In this sequel, Tony is unwilling to reveal to the world the powers his superhero armor possesses. Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle also star.

"Shrek Ever After" (May 21) is the fourth film in the twisted fairy-tale series. This time everyone's favorite Ogre (voiced by Mike Myers) embarks on a quest to see what his fairy tale home of Far Far Away would be like if he had never existed. Some bizarre events rule this alternate world, including a very overweight Puss in Boots (voiced by Antonio Banderas).

Yet another (animated) sequel is also due in theaters, the highly anticipated "Toy Story 3," which opens June 16th. In this installment, Andy is all grown up, moving away to college, and leaving Woody, Buzz, and the other toys apprehensive about where they could end up next. As usual with Pixar, "Toy Story 3" could prove to be a winner.

"The Last Airbender" (July 2), based on the popular Nickelodeon cartoon, is another film generating a lot of anticipation. In this live action interpretation, the chronicles of Aang unfold after he is discovered to be the Avatar, master of all four elements: Water, Earth Fire, and Air – not to be confused with James Cameron's blue skinned creatures. It is then up to Aang to restore balance to the world after one hundred years have passed in warfare waged by the Fire Nation. Aang, played by Noah Ringer, joins forces with waterbender Katara (Nicole Peltz) and her brother Sokka (Jackson Rathbone of "Twilight" fame) to master the elements and bring an end to the war.

Possibly the biggest film of the summer, "Inception," is due for release on July 16th. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon Levitt and Ellen Page, "It tells the story of Cobb, an agent who has a team of people who have access to a technology that allows them to enter people's minds through their dreams", as described by the film's director, Christopher Nolan. The film is likely to be a blockbuster, especially after Leo's success in "Shutter Island" earlier this year.
