In a landscape that is dominated by alternative acts and people that sing in auto-tune, it’s incredibly refreshing to hear pure rock n’ roll. After seeing The Who’s halftime performance at the Super Bowl however, it’s a reminder that the only ways to hear great rock n’ roll are if you have Guitar Hero, go to YouTube and watch old concerts or put in albums that have been out for thirty years. Things don’t look so good if one wants something new or something fresh. Or so one thought.
On Wednesday night, there was a pre release party for a local band called Township and their newest LP “Township – Volume 1.” This writer walked in the studio expecting a good show and a good time; he left saying to himself, “Township is Rock N’ Roll.”
For those upset with themselves that they weren’t born sooner to see bands like The Who or Led Zeppelin then Township is the band for you. With classic guitar riffs, suggestive yet addicting lyrics that one can’t help but bellow out (anyone have a case of “Beaver Fever”?), and songs that just get people up and bobbing their heads or pumping their fists.
Township consists of singer/guitarist Mark Pinansky (Runner and the Thermodynamics), drummer Greg Beadle (CancerConspiracy), John Sheeran (SPiTZZ) and their newly acquired guitarist Alex Necochea (Bang Camaro).
To quickly recap their past, Township came out with a bang in 2006 with their EP "Gunnin' Through The Nite" and they created a buzz within in the Boston scene, getting a lot of radio plays around the city. Their presence in Boston and the internet helped them even more in 2007 when their "Ladywood" EP came out as WBCN named their single "Give It To It" the award for Local Song of the Year AND won their annual "Rock n' Rumble" battle of the bands. In 2008, they came out with two LP's, "Coming Home" and "Township,” and their live shows kept garnering more and more attention.
This year, they will release the aformentioned "Township-Volume 1" and going on tour which starts Friday, February 19th and Saturday, February 20th at the Rosebud Diner in Somerville and includes stops in New York, Kansas City, Tulsa and the famous music expo SXSW in Austin, Texas.
So for those that want to rock out and have a good time then come join them at the Rosebud Diner and help kick the tour off in style. You will not leave disappointed.
