THIS ARTICLE IS FULL OF SPOILERS FOR
EPISODE 1 OF SEASON 3 OF "THE WALKING DEAD."

In the third season premiere of The Walking Dead, almost a year has passed since walkers ambushed the barn and the group was forced to flee. The group has been on the run and cannot find a stable place to settle down for a short period of time. Their supplies are running low; finding shelter is a priority.

After raiding houses and coming up short each time, the group stumbles upon a jail. Rick is convinced that if they can clear the walkers out, the jail would be a perfect – and safe – place for the group to settle down. Rick, Glenn, Daryl, T-Dog, and Maggie enter the field and are successfully able to kill all the walkers without injury. For one night, the group is able to rest peacefully.

Andrea’s savior from last season is finally revealed as a woman named Michonne. They have been traveling together since Michonne rescued Andrea from the walkers. It’s apparent that Andrea is sick; however, they do not go into much detail on what is wrong with her. Despite her illness, Michonne urges Andrea to continue onward even though Andrea wants to be left for dead. It seems that all the fight Andrea had built up from last season has escaped her once again.

The next morning, Rick is determined to get into the jail in order to start clearing out the walkers. Even though Lori begged Rick for a few nights of peace, he still believes that heading into the jail is the right thing to do, especially with Lori being very far into her pregnancy. Half of the group enters the jail and are encountered with a few walkers that they are able to kill easily. They clear out a precinct, where they are able to lock themselves in to avoid outside dangers.

Lori shares a concern with Hershel about her pregnancy. She is afraid that she has lost the baby since she has not felt it move in a couple of days. However, another concern is that she is terrified the baby will be born a walker. Since the group has learned that all humans carry the infection, it’s possible the baby will be born with the infection as well. She begs Hershel to kill her if she becomes a walker, as well as the baby.

Rick, Glenn, Hershel, Maggie, T-Dog, and Daryl continue on into the jail the next morning. The viewers are left on the edge of their seat as the group walks through empty dark tunnels, just waiting for that horde of walkers to appear. Sure enough, as Rick rounds a corner, a massive horde emerges before him. As our crew turn back, they are once again met with walkers. The group hurries through the tunnels, trying to find a way out. Maggie and Glenn get separated and left behind. As the group goes back to look for them, a walker who is on the floor grabs Hershel and bites him.

When the crew finally reaches a safe spot, Rick does the only thing he can think of to potentially save Hershel’s life and begins hacking off the part of his leg where he was bit. The viewer is left guessing whether or not Hershel will survive or become a walker. When Rick finishes, the group takes a look around the area they are confined in. And come face to face with other human beings.
