Beloved kitesurfer dies at Walberswick Beach

The local Suffolk kitesurfing community is mourning the loss of one of their own. Andy Smith, a man in his 50s, was beloved by all who knew him and was a known fixture in the kitesurfing community. By all accounts, his death comes as a complete shock considering he is the one who taught so many how to be safe while kitesurfing.

Smith’s body was recovered Sunday by an ambulance crew who tried unsuccessfully to revive him. While little information has been released about the exact circumstances surrounding Smith’s death, officials have ruled out foul play. Instead, bad weather is being blamed for the tragedy.

This isn’t the first time that a kitesurfing death has hit the headlines of late. Last September, a man in his 30s died after hitting rough sea conditions kitesurfing in Watergate Bay. In that instance, numerous others also fell into trouble kitesurfing, but they were able to find their way to safety.
