David Ortiz

Despite having such a great season thus far, do you think Ortiz has the right to be upset with the media?

Every time you think things are going to get better for the Red Sox, they get worse.

In his Sunday blog, ESPN’s Buster Olney referred to Boston’s clubhouse as “toxic.” He continued the criticism on Monday by saying that an “unhappiness that exists among Boston players and staff is multi-layered and deep.”

David Ortiz who has seen the best -- two World Series -- and some of the worst -- last September -- moments in Red Sox baseball quickly defended his team, saying that Olney’s description of the clubhouse is absolutely wrong.

“We all get along here real well, I can tell you that,” Ortiz said. “There’s not one guy right here that has a problem with any others.”

“I run this (expletive) clubhouse right here. This clubhouse has no problem. The last problem this clubhouse had was last year when everything came down to what it was in September, bit since then everybody’s cool and everybody’s trying their best to win games,” he added.

Before Thursday night’s game against Miami, Big Papi continued to show his frustration as he told reporters that there’s too much media-driven drama surrounding the Red Sox. “It’s starting to become the sh*thole that it used to be,” Ortiz said. “Look around, bro. Playing here used to be so much fun, and now every day it’s something new not even related to baseball. People need to leave us alone and let us play ball, man.”

Truthfully, it’s completely understandable why he’s upset.

Boston is known for being a high profile sports city. Within the past few years all of the four major sports teams have enjoyed a championship. Some teams even twice. Some even three times. But with all that happiness and fame also comes a lot of criticism. Regardless of the situation, expectations are always high when it comes to Boston sports. Now, given the epic collapse the Sox had last season, people have the right to expect a lot from that team. However, instead of rebounding from a tough year, this Sox season has been nothing but a disaster.

Yes, many of the Sox stories this year have been blown out of proportion but that shouldn’t be at all surprising. It also shouldn’t be surprising that Ortiz, who has been very outspoken in the past, went on this rant. But what got Papi even more pissed off was when he was asked about his contract status.

“This is my last year trying to prove people wrong. I’m just tired of dealing with this drama here. This is baseball, man,” Ortiz said. “It seems like everything that goes around her affects the whole nation.”

The worst part about this whole situation is that it comes at a time when the Red Sox are on a five game winning streak and Ortiz is putting up monster stats , batting. 310 with 18 HR and 49 RBIs. Yet, as aforementioned, when you think things are getting better, they somehow get worse.

Seems to be something new with this team every week so stay tuned for more to come in the 2012 Red Sox soap opera.
