Suffolk University’s Performing Arts Office (PAO) has various talented groups: a hip-hop dance team, a dance company, an acapella group and an improv comedy troupe among many other. This year, there is a new addition to the PAO family: a sketch comedy troupe.
Sketch comedy is a series of short scenes or “sketches”. The group was founded by Media studies major, Breanna Elizabeth, and English/Theatre major, Corinne DeCost. The group writes, directs and produces every one of their sketches. The members of the group can chose to perform, write, or do both.
Last year, Elizabeth and DeCost were part of Shakespeare in Hollywood, a production put on by the performing arts office. During this time they began to wonder why unlike many Boston schools, Suffolk did not have a sketch comedy troupe. “We both share an obsession with Saturday Night Live and Monty Python,” said co-founder Elizabeth. “We thought it would be great if we went ahead and started our group.”
Shortly after this idea sparked, they held first auditions. Students had to prepare a short comedic monologue that would showcase their comedic strengths. This monologue could be taken from a movie, a show, or written by the person. “Basically, Corrine and I were looking for funny people” Elizabeth said. “Most importantly, we looked for people who had potential and could work well in an ensemble.”
The founders were able to recruit six Suffolk students that now make up SU’s Sketch Comedy troupe: Tom Martin, John MacGregor, Erica LeBlanc, Ashley Niemic, Alex Pappas and Stephie Kay. The troupe’s goal for this year is to become more known throughout Suffolk’s campus while bringing laughter to its students.
If you are interested in auditioning for Suffolk University’s Sketch Comedy Troupe sign up for auditions outside the performing arts office. Auditions will be held Tuesday, September 25th and Thursday, September 27th from 5-7pm. The troupe can also be reached at susketchcomedy@gmail.com
