This week, SGA Senator Ed Plamowski sat down with the Voice's Ben Fountain to talk about his candidacy for SGA Treasurer.
Plamowski said that his experience as both a member of the SGA's Finance Committee and having been in a student group outside of SGA, gives him a unique perspective on how money requests are handled within the student government.
"You learn over the course of the year being on the Finance Committee that it's really your job to protect the student's money," he said. "And when you request money, I know from experience that sometimes you expect more than can possibly be given to you."
Plamowski said that most student groups who request money from the Finance Committee will get their money, but as SGA Treasurer he will try to educate student club treasurers on the financial system at Suffolk in order to ensure that everyone gets what they're asking for from SGA. He hopes to require that club treasurers attend at least one Finance Committee meeting a month to learn the system.
"If you teach these treasurers how the system works, they're going to come in and definitely get their money," he said.
Plamowski added that he empathizes with student groups who request money from SGA.
"The first time you go into Finance Committee, it's a nerve-wracking thing, you don't know what to expect. I remember going in blind, having never seen a meeting before," he admitted.
"But once you see it's an easy process, it's really a lot easier on you as a treasurer."
In terms of dealing with problem situations, Plamowski stressed communication and trust.
"If students know how the accounts stand, if they know what the university is capable of providing right now and if they know that you're really looking out for their best interests by protecting their money, then I think things will go over well."
