This week, SGA Senator for the class of 2013 Martha Alvarado sat down with the Voice's Ben Fountain to talk about her candidacy for the SGA Vice President.

Alvarado said that her main goal as vice president would be to extend library hours, "another three or four extra hours," a goal that would be put into motion next year and would become a reality "hopefully by the start of [Fall 2011]."

She also made it clear that she would not make any big promises for her first year as vice president.

"A lot of big promises had been made in the past and not kept," she said. "I don't want that anymore, I don't want it to be: 'Martha can't be held accountable for the things she promised last year because she hasn't followed through with them.'

I think the goals I have in mind are very accomplishable goals and it's not something that's going to cost the university thousands upon thousands of dollars."

Alvarado disagreed when asked if being the youngest candidate for VP put her at a disadvantage.

"I think it actually gives me the greatest advantage," she said. Her opponents, she argued, will be seniors next year and "they can make promises and try and make sure these things get done but if they don't get done, they're not going to be here to continue them.

"I'm going to be a sophomore. I'm going to be able to start things and make sure they get off the ground my junior year and my senior year, even if I'm not re-elected as vice president."
