Three years ago Suffolk University partnered with “Dump and Run, Inc.” oF Brooksfield, MA to start the Dump and Run program in the residence halls. The waste prevention program is held during Move Out Week where students can drop off any items that they will no longer use and are in good condition.
From Wednesday, April 28 through May 10, students can drop old items off at designated and labeled bins located in every residence hall.
Matt Aten, the outgoing Vice President of Suffolk University’s Environmental Club, volunteered last year. He had a great experience and is happy that it is continuing this year.
“The event is run by the Sustainability Coordinator, Erica Mattison, along with several local non-profit organizations who collect students' unwanted items during move-out and redistribute them to those in need,” said Aten adding that unwanted items that will be accepted include clothing, shoes, school supplies, furniture, house wares, bed linens, unopened non-perishable food, books, unopened toiletries, and cleaning supplies.
“Working with the Dump and Run organization, the Sustainability Office, Facilities Management, ABM, and Residence Life & Summer Programs, the collected materials will be donated to local organizations, such as Goodwill and Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD),” said Jamie Depelteau, Res Life Director at Miller Hall and Suffolk University Sustainability Committee member.
The program not only supports a great cause and donates to charitable organizations but it also encourages results in significant financial savings for the university. It reduces trash disposal costs and lowers the environmental impact by diverting unnecessary waste from landfills.
Items that will not be accepted include broken or stained goods, halogen lamps, used personal care, or open food.
