To the Class of 2013:

It seems like just a short while ago we were the overwhelmed new-comers to Suffolk, attempting to learn Donahue from Sawyer and decipher our first syllabi. As such, there is some level of shock that March is now upon us, bringing with it Spring Break and the accompanying preparation for the conclusion of our first year together at this University. Several months ago, you granted me the extreme honor of representing you as a member of the Student Government Association; I write you today hoping that my performance as Senator has met your approval, and that you will once again entrust me with the great responsibility which is carried by this post.

Since arriving here, I have heard few good words expressed about the SGA. In their critiques, many have cited a similar partisan polarization to that which currently has left the United States Congress gridlocked. In a second term as senator, I would continue to operate as a liaison between these camps, working to destroy this horrible reputation. While I am proudly and unabashedly a member of the Suffolk University College Democrats, I have spent much of the last year forming friendships with those who call themselves Republicans, as well as others who prefer to remain un-enrolled in either major party. It is my firmest belief that our Senate should operate without regard to partisan affiliation, and that is how I would approach all legislative alliances.

While I have made my voice heard in meetings of the general SGA, I have been most vocal as a member of the Finance Committee. It is on this board that I have completed my proudest work thus far, acting as a proponent of fiscal responsibility at a time when funds are shrinking not only here at Suffolk, but around our great nation. Should I win re-election this spring, I would seek to be appointed to this committee again; hard decisions are coming over the next year, and a prudent opinion must be present to make the right choices.

The 2010-2011 school year will be an extremely critical time for SGA going forward. After years languishing in committee and remaining a pipe dream, a real push is being made for the acquisition of a full-fledged Student Union building, and many of the executive board candidates have expressed interest in the project. Furthermore, the time for the periodic review of the SGA Constitution has arrived. With your vote, I will contribute an educated and independent judgment on these pertinent issues.

Not lost on me, however, is my most important responsibility as an SGA senator; that is to be YOUR voice in government. As such, I want to hear what you have to think about both the items currently slated to come before the Senate, as well as other issues you feel need to be confronted around the university. You can reach at jjdulak@suffolk.edu; www.facebook.com/dulak; and can follow me on Twitter, @jjdulak. Over the next couple weeks, I will begin an outreach program that  I will continue throughout any second term that is bestowed upon me.

The election for Student Government Association runs from March 3-8, and will be conducted through the online portal,  SUConnect. Whether you find me worthy of placement on your ballot or not, I sincerely hope you will take part in this microcosm of our distinctly American form of democracy. It is in this patriotic vain that I ask for one of your nine votes.

Sincerely,
Justin J. Dulak, Candidate for Class of 2013 Senator
