Where's the Snow Day?

The Naked City

hypocricy

I'll let this speak for itself.

While certainly not angry, I was confused last week Wednesday when Suffolk declared a snow-day, when little to no snow remained on the ground the entire day. Still more confused was I a week later, along with the rest of the student community, when there was an actual snowstorm yet no snow-day. One can’t help but wonder what had encouraged school officials to make such a backward decision?

I might as well have pondered the apocalypse. In the end, the best answer, and indeed the only one, that I could come up with was simply that this is Suffolk; some level of hypocrisy will always be creeping around our “campus.”

Even a century ago during our school’s beginnings, it prided itself on offering first-class educations to those of even the most humble backgrounds. Inconsistent with such a modest reputation, our president is now receiving millions and millions of dollars in bonuses, while student debt is more common than ever.

If you’ve ever ridden the T, you will likely come across an advertisement for Suffolk: “The difference between a cubicle and a corner office,” some of them boast. Expand your travels to include the English department or student organizations on the fourth floor of the Donahue building, and guess what your eyes will fall upon. Well, there’s really no need since I’m about to tell you: the corporate cages that Suffolk is supposedly rescuing people from.

So there’s not much point in questioning the method of Suffolk’s madness, if you even remember how my rant began. Instead, save your energy and sanity by just enjoying the ride. Maybe, if you’re ever as lucky as I was last week, a snow-day will be announced the same day that you have both an unfinished paper due and an exam.
