For over two years, Suffolk University's Ride Along Program has attempted to deter high school students, college students and even college graduates from waking up the neighbors. College students and young urban professionals have been known to occasionally throw a party that is perceived to be too loud for residents of such Boston neighborhoods as Beacon Hill and the nearby North End. Often times, when the parties get too noisy, neighborhood residents will take the advice of the Boston Police Department and dial 911 to make a noise complaint. Quickly rewind to September 2006 and this is where the Ride Along Program enters the picture.
What was life like 60 years ago? Well, it was 1949, and things were certainly different than they were today. There was no such thing as The Internet, the Red Sox had gone only 31 years without a title win, and the world was still recovering from World War II. At Suffolk University, 1949 was the birth of what is today known as Suffolk Free Radio, the college's student run radio station. The station was founded by alumni Richard Strunsky, who came to Suffolk University to be a faculty advisor in 1949. For the early years of radio, the station was able to broadcast over Boston's airwaves for a 15-minute show. This length soon increased to 30 minutes, and these segments were broadcast weekly.
The (Beverly) Hills were alive with the sound of wedding bells on Saturday when MTV's most famous couple, Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt tied the knot. The longtime couple has had their fair share of rocky moments in the past - filmed for the world to see on MTV's hit reality series The Hills - but that didn't stop them from walking down the aisle with one another after roughly two years of dating.
On April 22, 1979, the Boston Bruins swept the Pittsburgh Penguins in four games in the quarterfinals. They went on to play the Montreal Canadiens in the semifinals. The Bruins forced a seventh game in that series, and in the overtime of that seventh game, on May 10, 1979, the Canadiens' Yvon Lambert scored the winning goal at 9:33 to give the Canadiens the series win.
Eric Staal didn't score and the Carolina Hurricanes still won. That's how much of a surprise the Bruins' Game 7 loss was last night. Another year is gone and it is another year of frustration. Last night's loss made it the 37th consecutive season where the Bruins have not won the Stanley Cup.
Earlier in the year, I talked about how books are fundamentally different than other forms of media. This is mainly because you can walk into the Borders at Downtown Crossing and have thousands upon thousands of books at your disposal, most of which will take more than two hours to read unless you're in the kid's section. In that case, security will be there to ask you to leave shortly. My point is that unlike movies that are advertised or bands that go on tour, it's up to the reader to discover what is good and what was a waste of paper and ink. My job was to try and facilitate this process and hopefully get some people reading in the process.
In the NFL Draft on Saturday, the Patriots took the route of a team searching for an identity, trying to fill numerous open roster spots. Rather than keeping the 23rd pick they had possession of, they traded down twice in order to stockpile some young rookies. However, the Patriots are not a rebuilding team, and do not have several open roster spots, so why did they trade down at all? And why did they have 13 picks in the top 100?
On Spit Fire Debates, Ben Fountain and Bobby Keough debate the hottest topics in Boston sports today. In the first episode, the two muse on Red Sox in 09, college versus pro sports, and upcoming summer movies.
Being the result of 12 years of public education, my memory (what hasn't been intentionally forgotten) is packed with aged teachers so immersed into their coursework that they sometimes forgot why we needed their lessons to begin with-it happens accidentally, I'm sure, and not always with catastrophic results.
To celebrate the end of another fantastic school year, we Smart Ass Voice Writers decided to put our heads together and think up some reasons why we love the school we're at. We know we can be a little harsh on Suffolk at times, but at the end of the day, you know we love ya, baby. Here's some reasons why.
